As the leading brand in Kids Lunchboxes in Australia, we frequently get stories from schools running their own Rubbish Free Lunch Days - well actually, that is where we derived the NUDE FOOD MOVERS name.
I’m assuming that you are reading this knowing what these days involve. But if not – they are basically waste reduction initiatives that require children not to bring any form of packaging to school on this day. (Not as easy as it sounds).
This means no glad wrap, no mini snack packs of chips or biscuits, no yoghurt or snack fruit in containers, and no drinks in cans, tetra paks or throwaway bottles. Everything must come in some form of lunch box, container or carrier that will go home in the school bag at the end of the day.
I’ve heard of some schools carrying waste audits in every class whereby the class with the lowest amount of rubbish wins an award. (Talk about pressure on the poor parent trying to make a rubbish free lunch)!
Our NUDE FOOD MOVERS range is based on assisting parents in creating lunches on these days, but also beyond that, in promoting less rubbish generation, in the workplace and greater community.
We’d like to hear from those of you participating in Nude Food Days, (or with Kids in schools running these events). There’s no reason why a workplace can’t also run such a day. What are the biggest challenges with these days, and has the NUDE FOOD MOVERS range helped you? If not, tell us why.
We are currently working on some initiatives to assist schools and companies with running Nude Food Days. If you already have ideas, drop us a line.
Kelly says My son's School has a Nude Food Day every Thursday where 2 students go around to each class and weigh their waste (wrapper's etc as we use food scraps in the School's Compost). The class with the least amount of waste is given an Award (usually a small bright coloured plastic bin with 'Nude Food Winner' labelled on it) at the following Monday's assembly. I think it's a tremendous idea to educate our children the importance of waste that can be avoided simply by being smart about our choices.
Lee Schaeche-Odine says Jo - we're not just doing our bit for the environment it's also a small saving to the hip pocket. and there's less wastage! Indidvidual Puddings and Yoghurts are usually about 200g. My daughter Jeslyn who's 5 never finishes a full tub and wastes about 50g+ which used to go right through her lunch box. NOT NOW! She loves pouring her own yoghurt into the round container and cuts up cucumber and carrot for the other container! So I get 6-7 serves out of a 1kg Yoghurt as oposed to 6 serves of Yoghurt in individual tubs and a huge mess lol! I'll email our Principal shortly and plug the Nude Food Movement too! ;o)
Kylie Embury says I am trying to get my kid's school on board with the Nude Food Movement. We are currently having our biannual school fair so everyone is busy with that, but from next week I will follow up with them and get a notice out to parents with all the details to join the Nude Food Movement. With 750 students we have a HUGE rubbish problem - imagine if everyone used a Nude Food Mover - NO RUBBISH! My kids would be THRILLED as they HATE emu parades (where they have to pick up rubbish)
